Sustainability Achievements of 2012
A look back at some of the big steps taken toward sustainability across the world in 2012.
- Rio +20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development took place this past June as a follow up to the initial Earth Summit that took place in 1992. The event was preceded by a year of negotiations and had over 190 nations represented in attendance. The final outcome was established Sustainable Development Goals and a document declared “The Future We Want” which addresses increased protection of our oceans, creation of good jobs, sustainable energy, sustainable cities, sustainable agriculture, access to clean water and natural disaster management and mitigation. There has been much controversy on the effectiveness of the Summit and its outcome, however, it is a positive sign that global sustainability on all fronts is a top priority.
- The London Olympics were deemed the most sustainable Games ever with clearly defined and transparent goals and operations from the start that included sustainable buildings, sustainable food sources, sustainable transport, carbon management and zero-waste-to-landfill.
- The successful demonstration of the Navy’s Great Green Fleet during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, the worlds largest maritime warfare exercise, using biofuel blends of algae and cooking oil with ships operating at full capacity.
- Walmart holds Global Sustainability Milestone Meeting. One of the world’s largest retailers, Walmart has committed to using 100 % renewable energy, produce zero waste and sell products that sustain the environment and natural resources.
- Launch of Sustainable Apparel Coalition and the Higg Index to standardize the measurement and evaluation of apparel products on their environmental performance on every link of the supply chain.
- Sustainability measures drive up the value of companies. Consumer demand of sustainable solutions and transparency increases stock value for companies that make sustainability a priority and increasing efficiency reduces company costs.
